Something Borrowed, Something Blue
Tradition calls for the bride to wear something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

I am sure you have heard this little slogan before. It's been around for hundreds of years, and many brides seem to follow this in order to bring good luck to their wedding and marriage.

So where did this old slogan derive from you may ask? Some say it was actually derived from Britain. It is an English tradition.

So what does it mean? Let's break it down:

Something old: Refers to the bride having something old with her to symbolize that she will not forget her past nor her family once she weds and forms her own new family.

Something new: Symbolizes hope and optimism for this bride's new future.

Something borrowed: This borrowed item is usually from a happily married couple, the bride borrows an item to bear their good luck for their own marriage.

Finally, something blue: In ancient Rome, blue symbolizes love, and therefore it was not uncommon for brides to wear blue to symbolize the love they had.

So now, many years later, the modern bride continues to follow this custom in order to bless their marriage.

Here we will discuss what are some things you can wear on your wedding day to fulfill this lifelong tradition.

As for something old, most brides like to wear a piece of jewelry that belonged to a mother or perhaps a grandmother. Earrings, a necklace, or even a bracelet are common "old" items that the bride wears.

Something new, is an easy task to accomplish as all brides usually wear something new from head to toe. The bridal gown is usually new, the shoes are new, even the head piece is new. But if not, the bride will usually wear a new piece of jewelry or clothing article under her dress.

For something borrowed, the bride usually is given this gift by a close friend, a bridesmaid or a maid of honor. A special item is given to the bride to borrow during her wedding. It may be a piece of jewelry, a bracelet, even a hair piece.

Something blue, here is where the fun begins. Most brides now a days wear white, so adorning something blue may be a difficult task. Brides have made it a game to hide the blue item. It may be blue socks, a blue garter, or maybe blue under garments. Nobody knows but each bride hides something blue somewhere!
